The Root Cause of Chronic Diseases

By Dana Garcia

The main underlying cause of chronic diseases is inflammation. This silent killer is like a fire that starts in the gut and spreads to other parts of the body. Inflammation is the body’s natural immune response to stress from diet, lifestyle and environmental factors. We need the inflammatory response in order to heal from injuries and infections. The problem is when inflammation becomes chronic and leads to diseases by damaging the body. Inflammation causes cell damage, cholesterol plaques, hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance and more.

Inflammation is perpetuated by animal products, processed foods (refined carbs, alcohol, oil, etc.), infections (parasites, viruses, bacteria) and toxins (drugs, antibiotics, mercury, pesticides, BPA, etc.). Common allergenic foods such as genetically modified foods (corn, soy, gluten) and dairy are also culprits that cause inflammation in the gut. When the intestinal lining is repeatedly damaged by processed foods, animal products, infections and toxins, leaky gut can occur. This is when holes in the intestinal lining allow undigested food particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream causing inflammation in other parts of the body leading to chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, psoriasis, arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

The good news is that we have the power to prevent these diseases by eating an anti-inflammatory diet rich in protective plant foods and by eliminating toxic skin care and cleaning products from our lifestyle.

Which inflammatory (processed foods, animal products) foods can you cut on back starting right now to reduce your risk of developing the top diseases of inflammation?
